The burner, the envelope and the basket are the 3 key parts of a balloon. Let us see how they work…
The burner utilizes propane gas to fill the balloon with hot air. There are 2 different metal tubes to carry the gas – the thin one carries the gas to the pilot light, and the thick tube carries the gas to a high pressure valve. The pilot then uses this valve to control the flame. The flame causes hot air to shoot up into the envelope of the balloon and keep it aloft.
If you are wondering what is the envelope. You cannot miss it because it is the balloon shape that traps the hot air. Made of nylon, it is designed to withstand high temperatures. Envelopes can be various colors, sizes and designs. Some companies use envelopes for advertising purposes.
Passengers ride in the basket which is made from wicker. Wicker is a very strong material used in making outdoor furniture. A basket can typically carry up to 6 people.
Getting yourself ready for the ride is important. Normally, a hot air balloon ride is conducted just before dusk, or during dawn. Generally, the wind is very good for hot air balloon rides near dusk, or at dawn.
Dress comfortably, in light layered fabrics like cotton. You may want a hat and sunglasses, or even a light jacket.
Generally, many rides take about one to three hours.
There will be what’s called a chase crew on the ground following the balloon. The job of the crew is to follow the balloon to landing, and then take care of the passengers and equipment.
Remember to bring along your camera and take lots of nice picture of the earth. Because no one’s ever absolutely sure where they’ll land in a hot air balloon, an adventurous sightseeing trip after the ride is always a fun idea!
